How Salt Lamps Can Help Protect You From EMFs

by Genevieve on May 26, 2009

Do you ever feel drained after working on the computer for a few hours? Or just kinda “beat” when you’re in the office? Or a little scattered after a long cell phone call?

Electro Magnetic Fields (EMFs) may be the culprit.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to neutralize EMF radiation in your office and home.

About EMFs
EMFs are invisible electric fields that are generated by charged particles in motion. EMFs can be found in power lines, cell phones, computers, microwaves, TVs, answering machines, blow dryers, cordless telephones, etc.

EMFs are known to “disrupt” our body’s composition. Recent studies link EMFs to increased risks of leukemia, lymphoma, brain and breast cancer, melanoma, miscarriages, birth defects, immune dysfunctions and most recently, Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have also found that EMFs can decrease our pineal gland’s secretion of melatonin, an important hormone that regulates our wake and sleep cycle, moods and basic task functioning. Depressed melatonin levels are associated with mood changes, depression, cancers and other psychiatric disorders.

In offices, EMF exposures can be up to 10,000 times greater than levels elsewhere.

Yikes! So what can we do?

In today’s ever-connected world, avoiding EMFs is all but impossible. The key is to reduce exposure when and where we can.

Behold the beauty and power of salt lamps
They’re beautiful… natural… healthy… glowing… and great additions to your healing arsenal.

Salt mineral lamps contain negative ions that are activated with heat (hence the lamp). These negative ions are the chemical opposites of the EMF and pollution ions that bombard our environment. Think of these lamps as little vacuum cleaners that suck up or neutralize the bad guys.

The salt in these lamps is typically mined in the Himalaya, Poland, or Persia. Be sure you buy from a reputable source, as there are imitations out there. The key is to look for a deep, rich color, as this indicates more minerals.

I’ve always loved rock formations and geodes, so I was delighted to find these beautiful rock lamps that come in all shapes, sizes and colors. I’ve got one at work and one at home.

I love how the earth has healing elements that contribute to our well being. How generous and abundant our world is! As one famous gemology book states, “love is all around us.”

Other things you can do to reduce EMF exposure

  • Unplug all electronics that aren’t in use. Some devices omit EMF particles even when they’re turned off! This is especially important when you sleep. Find a battery operated alarm clock or set it far away from your bedside.
  • Seek out low EMF electronics. My hubby bought me an awesome low EMF blow dryer for Valentine’s Day called the Farouk CHI GF 2100 Rocket Professional Hair Dryer Low EMF. It’s expensive but well worth it and dries my hair faster than any other blow dryer I’ve ever used.
  • Use a head piece with your phone. I’ve used a ferrite bead contraption from mercola.com because it reduces the EMFs from cell phones
  • Try out a pendant. My mom uses a Qlink EMF Protection Pendant which supposedly helps reduce EMF exposure. She believes it works.

How about you? How do you neutralize or avoid EMFs?

Whether you’re on a new diet, trying to lose or gain weight, or are simply curious about what you eat, you may want to track your foods. Knowledge really is power, and studies show that dieters who keep daily food diaries lose twice as much weight as those who don’t.

I’ve found a wonderful, free site that lets me track my foods in a way that’s easy and even fun.

It’s called SparkPeople. Here’s what so good about it.

photograph of meat and dairy from a local farmer

Most of us enjoy going to farmers markets to buy produce and fresh flowers during the summer months. And, if you’re lucky enough to live near a good farmer’s market that features naturally raised beef, lamb, and chicken, well, that’s even better!

But even if you’re roving farmers markets with cloth bags every weekend, most folks still rely on traditional grocery stores for the bulk of their meat and poultry needs.

I’m convinced there’s a better way. For over five years I’ve been buying meat and poultry exclusively from local farmers. And I’m pretty sure that, with a little internet sleuthing, most of you can do the same.

Here’s how to find local farm goodies – and why you’d want to.

montage of six health food products

Since following Bee’s plan, I’ve been more conscious of letting my body detoxify on all levels. Our bodies are great natural detoxifiers (that’s a whole other post) so I’m trying to avoid products that interfere with this sacred process.

Much to my dismay, unhealthy products are everywhere! Even in my local health food store I see:

  • Laundry detergent and shampoos with sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Baby food prepared with instant grains that are not properly prepared
  • Unsoaked nuts roasted in dangerous vegetable oils
  • Olives soaked in conventional vinegars
  • Salad dressing made with canola oil
  • Bacon cured with sugar
  • Gelatos with high fructose corn syrup

So I’m always on the hunt for new products that are simple, clean and “pro-healing.”

Here are six new (to me) products that I’m excited about.

image of a turtle with a rocket on his back

In the past, I treated my weight lifting routine like a race to the finish line. I hated doing it so I would get in the gym and zip through it as fast as possible.

No point in extending the misery.

But in retrospect, I was missing the point.

It’s kind of like the story of the tortoise and the hare. I was the hare, racing through the routine, confident that I was going to end up with ripped arms. But little did I know that slow and steady wins the race.

The Beautiful Benefits of Weight Training

by Genevieve on March 19, 2009

photo of a woman holding a dumbell

When I was in my twenties, I only needed cardio workouts to stay fit. I’d walk, run, bike, or climb stairs for 45 minutes and my body stayed lean and defined.

But, something changed as I approached my thirties. I kept up with my regular cardio workouts, but in spite of all that effort, I started to notice a little giggle in my upper arms. And some junk in the trunk.

I finally realized that I needed to do start doing that other thing that health experts recommend as part of a healthy fitness program.

Weight lifting.

Problem solved, right? Wrong.

I hated weight lifting. I dreaded it with every fiber of my being. It was boring. I didn’t see results. There was no sweat, no endorphin rush, no glory.

But as time passed, I could see how my lack of strength was affecting me. I got a sore back from sitting too long… I couldn’t lift that heavy box to the storage unit… A 20 lb. daschund took ME for a walk.

Something had to change. And, now that I’ve found the right weight lifting routine, it has!

Before I give you the skinny, let’s look at the benefits of pumping iron.

How to Stop Grinding Your Teeth at Night

Post image for How to Stop Grinding Your Teeth at Night

by Genevieve on March 15, 2009

This is a guest post from Genevieve’s husband.

On the morning of the big presentation my jaw ached as if I’d just chewed through our pillowtop mattress. And maybe my nightstand too. I’d been clenching my teeth all night long.

Like I always do when I’m stressed.

In the spirit of this blog, I’m exploring ways to relax and reduce stress. But in the meantime, I had to do something about my poor choppers.

My dentist checked me out and found that, while I didn’t have the wear associated with grinding, the sensitive and sore muscles in my mouth were telltale signs of a clencher.

This is a pretty common habit known as bruxism, and it’s the source of dental problems, migraines, poor sleep, and even bad backs.

Here are the solutions my dentist offered – and a video that may help you decide what method’s right for you.
