How Sweet it is: Breaking the Sugar Addiction

by Genevieve on February 5, 2009

I was a hopeless addict for the white powder… and I’m not talking cocaine!

Super sugar freak
Sugar was my drug of choice. She was my love and captor. I may not have had track marks on my arms, but I did have weight gain, hypoglycemia, athlete’s foot, and terrible dental degeneration including two crowns by age 19.

“I can stop at any time”
I couldn’t have “just one” hit of candy, cookies, cakes, etc. If I started with a taste, I’d end with a ton. I’m talking four boxes of powdered donuts empty on the floor, a packet of Lik-M-Aid in my sweating hands, and several Jolly Ranchers packed between my cheeks and gums – and still wanting MORE.

Well, after a lot of soul searching, the grace of God, and some wonderful support, I kicked my sugar addiction and haven’t looked back. It’s been 10 years.

How did I do it?
Over the next six posts I’ll share my story and explore:

  1. A Brief History of Sugar
  2. How Sugar Affects Our Bodies
  3. How to Break the Sugar Habit
  4. Great Sugar Substitutes
  5. Amazing Sugar-Free Treats
  6. How to Build Your Sugar Support System

Anybody else hooked on the white stuff? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

Hi Hala,

Thanks for your comment!

I know, sugar can be a bear to break free of but it is possible.

Stay tuned for some tips that might help you in the upcoming posts.

Bottom line, everyone should feel free around food cravings instead of being controlled by them. From someone who has been there, that’s no way to live.

Thanks for following along and wishing you well.

Genevieve
